When the disaster affects a smaller number of people, assistance can be requested by calling your local Red Cross chapter at 757-446-7762.
Arrangements will be made for a Disaster Team to meet with those affected and work with them on a plan for their recovery. This plan will cover the basic needs of emergency lodging, food, clothing, medications, and crisis counseling as well as the resources available to meet those emergency needs.
For the disasters that affect larger numbers of people, the American Red Cross works with local Emergency Management and response officials to coordinate a response. The emergency needs of safe lodging, food, clothing, medications, and crisis counseling will be addressed very quickly. Frequently the assistance is provided as a mass care service rather than on an individual basis so that more people can be helped initially.
