March is Red Cross Month

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia is celebrating Red Cross Month this March by giving thanks to the thousands of people in our communities who have personified America’s humanitarian spirit by donating their time, money and blood during the last year.

America has always been a place of humanitarian action and compassion: A place where people take care of each other whether they are down the block or around the globe. Putting compassion into action is deeply rooted in the American character and it would be difficult to find a community more compassionate and giving than ours here Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.Although hurricanes and tsunamis make the headlines, many people forget that the day-to-day work of the Red Cross takes place in communities like ours, and is made possible by those who volunteer their time, and the citizens and businesses who support their Red Cross through financial contributions.

Hundreds of residents of our Hampton Roads communities have volunteered thousands of hours this year to help local families when disaster strikes; teach their neighbors lifesaving skills such as first aid, CPR and water safety; help local military families communicate during emergencies; and much more.Generous individuals, families and businesses have donated many thousands of dollars to make it possible for the Red Cross to help our communities in preventing and preparing for emergencies and especially in responding to local disasters where the Red Cross provides compassion and care in the form of food, shelter, clothing, counseling and more.

Our communities have much to be proud of in the way they support their Red Cross, and in turn, they can be very proud of how their Red Cross serves those in need throughout Hampton Roads. Everything the Red Cross receives, comes back to the community many times over as the Red Cross always has and will always be there to help your friends, families and neighbors prevent, prepare for, and recover from emergencies with care and compassion.
