Training Courses

A variety of Red Cross course combinations are available that provide the training that you need in first aid; adult, child and infant CPR; and adult and child AED. All of our courses reflect the latest science for first aid, CPR and emergency cardiovascular care and meet OSHA Guidelines for First Aid, combining lecture, interactive video demonstrations and hands-on training to teach participants lifesaving skills.

Course participants also receive useful take-home materials that help you retain skills and serve as an excellent refresher and reference tool after training is complete.

Registration information
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Only paid pre-registration will reserve a space in a class.  Tuition cost includes all necessary texts and materials.  Prior registration is REQUIRED: No walk- in registration on the day of class will be accepted.  There is a limit of six students per class from any business or organization.


ONLINE registration
Register for class the easy online way.  Just find the class you need and click on the date and add the name of the student then click on the button to add it to your cart.  Then simply follow the Paypal directions.

 

Walk-in registration
Any individual unable to register on-line or by phone may come to any of our offices Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm to register for class.

Refunds will not be issued
Unless the class for which you have registered is cancelled or is full.  Requests to reschedule a class (received with less than 1 week notice) will be accepted only once and will be subject to a $10 administrative fee.  The American Red Cross reserves the right to cancel classes for which fewer than six students have registered.

Certification
To become certified, you must attend all sessions and complete all assignments successfully.  Classes begin promptly at the times indicated.  If you arrive late, you may not be admitted to class.  Please dress comfortably and casually so that you may participate fully in any activities required. First Aid and lifeguarding certifications are 3 years, CPR/AED for the healthcare provider are 2 years.  All other courses are for 1 year.

Re-Certification
A person may become recertified through retaking the class or challenging the class.  A challenge provides an individual with the opportunity to demonstrate their skill and knowledge outside of the formal class setting.  The participant has sole responsibility in preparing for the knowledge and skills tests.  Any one is eligible to participate in a challenge.  Individuals who do not hold a current American Red Cross certificate may participate in the challenge option one time only.  Non-certificate holders who do not pass the knowledge and skills tests must take a full course.  Individuals who possess a current American Red Cross certificate(s), or equivalent, may challenge as often as they like, as long as the certificate(s) remain current.

Can lost certificates be replaced?

We can send you replacement certificates for any courses taught in the Southeastern Virginia Chapter. Simply provide the course name, location and completion dates when making your request.  A processing fee will be assessed for each replacement certificate issued

Most American Red Cross Health and Safety courses require strenuous physical activity.  If you have any health concerns please consult your physician.

Combines CPR and first aid training to teach participants to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in infants, children and adults; perform first aid for cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, bleeding, sprains, strains, and to treat sudden illnesses. Useful textbook helps students retain skills and serves as a reference tool in an emergency.

Instructor Training
Lay Responder First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor

Our train-the-trainer programs allow you to become a Red Cross instructor and train others to save lives. This course includes a pretest of all basic level skills, which must be successfully completed before a candidate cntnues with the course. A pre-requisite of Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) is included in this course. It is designed to offer potential Red Cross instructors an opportunity to
become familiar with the services of the American Red Cross as well as basic teaching techniques.

TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL RESCUERS

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

 - This course combines a participant’s manual, lectures and video with

   hands-on skills training to cover the following areas: 

 - Responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children

   and infants

 - Using an AED on adult and child victims of cardiac arrest

 - Using personal protective equipment to stop bloodborne pathogens and

   other diseases from spreading

New Two-Year Certification!Participants will receive the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider certificate with a validity period of two years. Lifeguards participating in this course will receive the CPR/AED for Lifeguards certificate valid for one year.

BABYSITTERS TRAINING

If you’re 11 to 14 years old, you can get the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and schoolage children. This course has recently been updated, expanded and redesigned for today’s babysitters – and includes cool new products to make the course more engaging than ever.

SWIMMING & LIFEGUARDING COURSES

Lifeguarding

If you’re 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start.

This course helps you develop skills and experience valued by colleges and future employers. You’ll develop new skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, fostering a “take charge” attitude.

Classroom learning and handson practice build key skills:

  • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
  • Rescue skills in the water and on land
  • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR to help you prepare for any emergency
  • Professional lifeguard responsibilities, like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons
